Flights, hotels, local transport, and activities: what to check at every step when a wheelchair, a walker, or a limited walking distance is part of the equation.

Traveling with a wheelchair, a walker, or limited walking capacity is a matter of logistics, not off-limits destinations. The right moves at the right moments - before booking, at the airport, at the hotel, on the ground - make all the difference between a stressful trip and a successful one.
Wheelchair assistance is ideally requested at booking time, then confirmed at least 48 hours before departure to be guaranteed - a same-day request is still possible, but only handled on a best-effort basis. In the United States, the TSA Cares program can be contacted at least 72 hours before departure to arrange support at the security checkpoint.
A room that's "accessible" on paper can still be cut off from the rest of the hotel by stairs - check that the full route (entrance, restaurant, pool, spa) is genuinely usable, not just the room itself.
The transit map doesn't tell the whole story: an "accessible" subway station can have had a broken elevator for months, and the cobblestones or slopes of an old town affect a manual wheelchair far more than a pedestrian. Check the network's actual condition before relying on it as your only option.
Write ahead of your visit rather than relying solely on the website: many museums and sites have an accessible route that isn't obvious online, or an accessible entrance different from the main one.
Moving around (transfers, manual propulsion, assisted walking) has a real energy cost, separate from how much time it takes. An itinerary that looks reasonable on paper can be exhausting in practice.
Every city and every hotel has its own blind spots - the only real test is asking the precise question rather than trusting a generic word. On this site, the accessibility filters (step-free access, elevator required, roll-in shower, flat terrain...) are designed to avoid exactly that kind of guesswork.
